Blueberries – the Elixir of Youth?
Blueberries – we all know they’re perfectly sweet and delicious, but did you know they’re healthier than any other fruit? Thanks to the high antioxidant content, blueberries are great for our heart and cardiovascular system. They’re also full of anthocyanins, rare and powerful compounds that give them their trademark deep-blue color.
What Does Science Say for Blueberries?
Even science has confirmed their incredible benefits. According to one study, blueberries can prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries and prevent numerous cardiovascular conditions. At the same time, consuming the berries has been associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction, especially in middle-aged and young women.
Other studies have revealed that the presence of antioxidants and other compounds in these dark-colored berries can reduce the risk of hypertension as well as improve digestion and possibly even prevent some types of cancer.
Nutritional Profile of Blueberries
Apart from antioxidants and anthocyanins, blueberries also contain vital minerals such as manganese. As a nation, we’re far too deficient in manganese, so eating a cup of blueberries is highly recommended. The mineral plays a key role in helping the body form connective tissue, blood clotting factors, and even sex hormones. It’s much more important than we think, even playing a part in normal brain and nerve function.
Blueberries are also full of fiber which can improve your digestion. Consuming a cup of blueberries every day, which only have 80 calories per cup btw, can boost your metabolism like nothing else.
How Do We Consume Blueberries?
If you can’t find them fresh, frozen blueberries work just as well. You can add them to your smoothies for a richer and sweeter taste. However, it’s best to consume them fresh, and growing them in your home or backyard is as simple as it gets.
Buy a blueberry bush from the “top hat” variety and plant it into a pot. Use soil with 4.5-5 pH levels and keep it moist. Make sure your container is short and large, not tall and narrow. Blueberries need space to grow, so they will benefit from a wider pot. The pot needs to have good drainage as well.
Watch your berries grow and harvest when ready – they will taste better than ever!
